On August 17, 2017, the band released a mixtape, The Beauty Between, that includes several collaborations with hip-hop artists and producers, including Propaganda, Andy Mineo, Beautiful Eulogy, Derek Minor, Beleaf and DSTL. ![]() Their second studio album Beyond Control was released June 24, 2016, and was the band's most commercially successful release to date. Working with BadChristian Music and well-established indie label Tooth & Nail Records, they released their debut LP, Becoming Who We Are, on October 27, 2014. Their fourth EP, 2014's Live in Color, was released by BadChristian Music. In late 2013, Gardner and the band announced they were leaving Mars Hill, where they had served as worship leaders and artists on the church's label. A year later, they released the studio EP, Asaph's Arrows, followed by a Christmas EP, Joy Has Dawned. Drawing on a variety of influences from math rock and hip-hop, to the dense sound of Canadian indie outfit Broken Social Scene, they recorded their first live EP, Sin, at a Good Friday service in 2011. Kings Kaleidoscope has recorded four EPs and six LPs, as well as a series of live studio sessions.īased out of Seattle, Washington, Kings Kaleidoscope formed in 2010 at a Mars Hill Church plant on the campus of the University of Washington, where Gardner was a worship leader. Their music features an eclectic range of electronic, woodwind, string and brass instruments, with a musical style described as indie rock meets hip hop production with a sprinkle of Disney. I was moved to a different place.Īnd then-it’s just hilarious, man-a week after the album comes out, I started having panic attacks again. It was just like, ‘Geez, I feel bulletproof, I feel like Iron Man.’ This is where it gets really sketchy, but it was almost as if God let me be in a place that normally my makeup isn’t at in order to feel content and apathetic and not really need Him, you know? I know that sounds wild, but generally I feel such a desperate need to be in relationship with God because of my mental health that it was a totally different experience for me. And for the past year and a half I started to feel pretty invincible for the first time in a long time-no meds, no therapy. I come from a severe anxiety disorder, and that has driven me to write a lot in the past. How did creating this album affect your personal faith? I mean, the church is a freaking mess and we have to pull it apart and shift it, but the whole thrust of this album is how we can’t lose the most important thing in that process, because our problems with the church are not our problems with Jesus. I’m not saying all the stuff that’s been deconstructed is bad. I feel like that captures the mindset of learning to be comfortable in that tension.įor sure. He says mathematicians end up going insane because they try to build a bridge to the infinite, but poets are content to swim in the sea. Chesterton has this great quote about the difference between mathematicians and poets. There were a lot of true experiences with God as a part of that, and I think it’s hard for people not to throw it all away. There’s a lot of crap there, but I also can’t leave what was real, you know? I don’t want to just abandon what was real about that. Having worked for something like that, that’s why Kings Kaleidoscope started. I think a lot of people have experiences where they are part of a big church organization that really hurts them. ![]()
